The Advantage of Staying
Am I becoming the kind of leader who helps build a place where I do not have to betray myself to succeed?
Exec summary
This article goes well beyond retention. It is about whether leaders like me still believe a fuller promise is buildable at all: a place where growth, contribution, relationship, and humanity reinforce each other strongly enough that success does not require self-betrayal. That also requires adult responsibility: learning to recognize what self-betrayal looks like in me, in real time.
The deeper question is not only whether the company is worthy. It is whether the way I lead is helping make it more worthy…and whether I am becoming more worthy of being followed in that pursuit. It is whether I am becoming the kind of leader who helps build a place where I do not have to betray myself to succeed, or expect you to.
The visible world already rewards a narrower, finite game: transaction, extraction, title math, comp math, protection, leverage, optionality. That is the dominant logic of today. This piece is not denying that reality. It is asking whether something fuller is still buildable inside it…and what leadership responsibility looks like if the answer is yes.
The advantage of staying is built long before the risk appears
Many people come here because they do not want to settle for a narrower definition of success. They want high standards and high humanity. They want meaningful challenge and real relationship. They want business growth, relationship growth, and human growth to reinforce each other instead of competing with each other. They want to build a career in a place where the norm is to grow across the full range of what matters.
That integral intention is rare. It is also part of what has made Slalom (and your enterprise) magnetic for a long time.
Clients and partners feel it in many pockets. Teams feel it. Leaders feel it. It is part of why people still come here with energy, hope, and belief. It is part of why many left larger/more “corporate” firms in the first place. They were not just looking for a friendlier place where they could make money. They were looking for a more integrated advantage (whether they knew it consciously or not). A place where exceptional performance did not require abandoning humanity/health/family. A place where growth did not require fragmentation of self. A place where work, relationship, and development would strengthen each other & compound.
In this season of transformation and reshuffling, the question is not whether that promise has ever been real. It has been and it is. The question is whether we will expand it, deepen it, and redesign what now needs serious redesign so that the promise becomes more true, more often, and more sustainable for the purpose we have and the future ambitions we are trying to pursue.
When the late-stage save effort reveals the contradiction
High performers do not simply want more attention, more perks, or late-stage persuasion when risk rises. By that point, those moves can look and feel exploitative, revealing the contradiction between why someone chose to come here and why they may now be questioning whether the advantage of staying is still real.
If the original promise was a more integrated form of advantage, then a sudden/thin attempt to preserve commitment for company benefit does not rebuild belief. It often confirms the deeper fear: that the relationship has narrowed from developmental to extractive. That insight matters because it names something many people feel and very few people say out loud. The issue is not merely that late-stage persuasion is ineffective. The issue is that it can expose the gap between the place I believed I was joining and the place I may now fear I am actually in.
High performers don’t want to settle; they want the standard to be fully human
What high performers want is to be in an environment where excellence is expected and where that excellence is held in a deeply generous/human way. They want to be challenged in ways that make them stronger, wiser, more capable, and more themselves. They want stretch that develops them, not stretch that quietly uses them up.
They want leadership that sharpens contribution, relationship that expands/accelerates access + capacity, and a culture that makes growth feel real/it’s the norm not a heroic individual act. They want to become more capable while also becoming more whole/human. They want to contribute at a high level without having to split themselves in different versions of themselves to do it.
They also want to work in a system where the relationship is real enough that people are not reduced to role, function, or economic utility, even while the enterprise remains unapologetically focused on performance, value creation, and mutual advantage. This is one of the deepest truths underneath the whole conversation: high performers do not want a diluted standard. They want a fuller one. They want the standard to be fully human.
The deeper promise of advantage was always in the integration (not the separation)
Most workplaces still normalize a narrower understanding of advantage. The assumption is that people eventually have to choose. Drive results or care for humans. Build the business or develop people. Push performance or protect wellbeing. Focus on clients or focus on culture. That is the false tradeoff.
At Slalom, the deeper promise has always been that business development, relationship development, and human development are not separate games. They are integrated. They rise or fall together. That stance is uncommon. It is also one of the clearest sources of real advantage when it is actually embodied.
And that integrated advantage changes how we relate across the whole ecosystem, not just inside reporting lines. Employee and employer, client and consultant, partner and vendor still have distinct roles, accountabilities, and commercial realities. But the quality of relationship is not meant to stop at those boundaries. The goal is not to erase roles or economic reality. It is to build relationships real enough that role boundaries no longer define the limits of trust, humanity, or mutual care. Blurring the lines is a worthwhile fully human experiment.
This is where the language often breaks down. People hear human and assume soft.
They hear relationship and assume secondary. They hear culture and assume nice-to-have. But this is not soft fluff sitting outside the real work. This is human infrastructure. It is the environment (the execution conditions) through which the work actually happens. That makes this a business velocity and economics challenge.
It shapes trust speed, learning speed, recovery speed, collaboration quality, decision quality, client confidence, retention, adaptability, the amount of energy lost to friction, guardedness, rework, delay, and unnecessary suffering. It is already inside execution. It is already inside performance. It is already inside the economics. We may minimize it because of historical norms and language, but we do not get to escape it.
That is why the vision language I use for global leadership development is “more humans at higher levels of development and healthier humans at every level” is not soft language. It is operating logic for exceptional, sustainable, business building outcomes. If we believe in & want stronger leaders at all levels, stronger high-performance teamwork (HPT), stronger client/partner relationships, and stronger long-term org performance, this integration is not extra. It is the work.
What flight risk is really telling us
This is why retention cannot be reduced to a conversation about late-stage intervention. By the time someone is visibly questioning whether more advantage sits outside the company than inside it, something more upstream is already being revealed. The signal is not just about the individual. It is telling us something about the environment. So the questions are intelligent questions….
· Is this still a place where staying means expanding/stretching?
· Is this still a place where the network around me increases my capacity to do, contribute, relate, grow, and become?
· Is this still a place where my standards are being called up without requiring fragmentation, guardedness, or self-betrayal?
That is the real test…am I still being stretched in the direction of what matters most, to me? Not all stretch creates loyalty. Exploitative/extractive stretch drains. It depletes energy, narrows trust, and makes people guarded. It may produce output for a while, but it weakens belief. People feel the difference between being stretched in service of becoming and being stretched in service of extraction.
Energizing stretch does the opposite. It is demanding, but meaningful. It feels aligned with what matters. It increases capability, congruence, trust, and aliveness. It helps people feel more advantaged in the pursuit of work and life that actually matter to them. It creates more contribution and more wholeness within the contribution/effort. This is where the stretching itself becomes a form of sustainable energy and spreads into collective energy as the norm. That is what real advantage feels like.
This season is testing my/our belief. Good.
This standard is personal and systemic…individual and collective. Just as high-performing leaders have to redesign internal patterns and habitual ways of operating in order to live into the future ambitions and commitments they are making to themselves, their families, their teams, and their clients…..high-performing firms must do the same.
Seasons of transformation test belief. They reveal where aspiration is sustainable, where magnetism is still alive, and where internal design elements are no longer sufficient for the future we say we want. Slalom’s magnetism is very real. It is part of why clients still feel something different here. But it is also true that many talented people are questioning whether more advantage now sits outside Slalom, than inside it. That low-horse tension is real. This season is testing our belief in what makes this community special and in whether we are willing to redesign seriously enough to deliver on the ambitions we keep naming. I’m up for the test.
The constraints of this season do not limit our responsibility to this work. They clarify it.
Designing an environment worthy of belief
So the strategic/integral move is not to invent a “new” reason for people to stay. It is to more deliberately expand, deepen, and redesign the conditions that make staying here even more powerful.
· That means building a place (community) where high standards and high humanity belong together.
· A place where business growth, relationship growth, and human growth are integrated.
· A place where the norm is to grow & staying means expanding.
· A place that becomes even more magnetic to clients, future teammates, partners, families, and extended communities across the globe…because it is embodying a more mature standard of relationship, results & advantage.
Our Slalom vision points toward this important future: a company where meaningful work and meaningful life reinforce one another. They are integrated. For that vision to become more real in more places around the globe, we cannot think of empowerment as something bestowed by the company. Our responsibility is to create the execution conditions in which people can more fully self-empower. That puts ownership, agency, and personal navigation clarity back where they belong: with the person, supported by conditions worthy of that responsibility. That is how people grow, contribute, relate, and lead in ways that are both deeply human and high-performing.
During every season, not just this one, the question is whether the current environment makes that standard easier to practice, repeat, and spread under real conditions.
The move is continuing to design an environment more worthy of belief. Leadership more worthy of being followed into the pursuits that matter most to you, me and to us. The strongest retention advantage is about becoming the kind of community where exceptional people, experience staying as one of the strongest bets they can make on their growth, their contribution, their relationships, and their future.
That is the advantage of staying.
How to Recognize the Drift
Seasons like this reveal whether we are still willing to co-create a fuller standard…or whether we are quietly retreating into a narrower one. That retreat does not always look dramatic or resistant. It often looks reasonable, mature, strategic, even prudent. So one useful question is not just what people say they believe, but what signals are showing up in how they lead.
We are not sorting people into heroes & sellouts, resistors & champions. The point is to notice the more sublte, non-resistance and drift. In ourselves first.
The strongest retention advantage is not late-stage persuasion. It is becoming the kind of place where staying really does mean expanding…a system whose execution conditions make it easier, though never easy, to do the things that grow us and harder to normalize self-betrayal.
That is the real work of leading self, team, org culture, and ecosystem toward deeper advantage. And in every season, not just this one, it is also the deeper question:
Am I helping build that kind of advantage here…for myself and for others?
