WHO WILL THEY SEE YOU BEING? Five Dos&Don’ts for how to show up even more JEDI when you host an innovation/agile/change/ leadership learning session.
CXO, you own the dojo. Everyone loves that you are self-confident and have vision. But, for a few hours, since the objective is a learning experience, I would invite you to bring out your most JEDI “situational humility” energy and dial back any whiff of executive arrogance. You’re the boss, so you can do whatever you want. My suggestion, if you’re open to hear it, is that today you focus on showing your team that you value learning (even more than knowing); show them that you care about the human beings in the room (even more than you care about the content), by learning TOGETHER with them.
I proactively check to see if I can connect with the executive sponsors that will be joining us (in the learning dojo). 90% of the time the leaders do fantastic without any preparation or coaching from me, or my team whatsoever. The leader shows up great and fully engaged with what their team will be learning. 10% of the time what comes out of the executive’s mouth is wildly unexpected and counterproductive — but not a surprise to the participants — ouch. This is why I like to pre-meet if possible, to avoid that scenario.
